Undercrown is Drew Estate's traditional maduro brand, and it started as the cigar the rollers smoked. Around 2009, Liga Privada demand at La Gran Fábrica was outrunning supply, and the torcedores were asked to stop smoking Ligas on the floor. They built their own blend from other primings of the same rare tobaccos. Drew Estate released that factory smoke in 2011. The original, now called Undercrown Maduro, uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper, a Connecticut River Valley stalk-cut Habano binder, and Brazilian Mata Fina and Nicaraguan filler.
Who makes Undercrown? Drew Estate, by hand at La Gran Fábrica in Estelí. Jonathan Drew's company put the rollers' blend on the market. Swisher has owned Drew Estate since 2014. Shade followed in 2015, blended by Willy Herrera: an Ecuador Connecticut wrapper over a Sumatra binder. Sun Grown arrived in 2017 with an Ecuador sun-grown Sumatra wrapper. Undercrown 10 marked the tenth year. Liga Privada is the scarce broadleaf line. Undercrown is the one the factory floor made for itself.
