Padrón Cigars is one of the most respected and consistent names in the premium cigar world, founded in 1964 in Miami by Cuban émigré José Orlando Padrón. After leaving Cuba following the revolution—where his family had deep tobacco roots in Pinar del Río—Orlando started with a single roller and a dream of recreating the full-flavored cigars he loved. He quickly turned to Nicaraguan tobacco, recognizing that the volcanic soils and microclimates of the Estelí region offered a profile remarkably similar to the legendary Cuban leaf.
In 1970 the company relocated operations to Estelí. Despite immense challenges—including the Nicaraguan civil war, a factory fire, and U.S. embargoes—Padrón persevered and grew into a multi-generational family business now led by Jorge Padrón. The brand is famous for its no-nonsense approach: no sales force, direct relationships with retailers, and an obsessive focus on quality. The regular Padrón line, the 1964 Anniversary Series, and the ultra-premium 1926 Serie (honoring Orlando’s birth year) are all Nicaraguan puros or near-puros that deliver remarkable consistency, complexity, and aging potential. Padrón remains a benchmark for what Nicaraguan tobacco can achieve when grown, cured, and blended with generations of expertise.
