Brick House is a J.C. Newman brand named for the brick house in Hungary where founder Julius Caesar Newman grew up, family upstairs and a tavern downstairs. He introduced the marca in 1937 as a Cuban-tobacco cigar. It faded after the embargo. Grandsons Eric and Bobby Newman brought it back in 2009 as a Nicaraguan cigar, and Cigar Aficionado named it Best Bargain of that year.
Who makes Brick House? J.C. Newman, at its own PENSA factory (Puros de Estelí Nicaragua) in Estelí, which opened in 2011. Classic uses an Ecuador Havana wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler. Maduro uses Brazilian Arapiraca. Connecticut is the milder line. Diamond Crown, the family's ultra-premium, is a different story: those are handmade at Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic. Brick House is the Nicaraguan value brand. Diamond Crown is the Dominican Fuente partnership.
